Previous Lectures Peak Oil: The World's Greatest Challenge Pat Murphy, Executive Director of Community Service, Inc., will give a presentation entitled “Peak Oil: The World's Greatest Challenge.” He will explain the fundamentals of oil depletion and why running out is not the problem. Murphy will also detail the implications of an oil crisis we are not prepared for. Finally, he will explain why alternatives won't solve the problem and why we must begin the transition to a less energy-intensive lifestyle. He will provide information about Agraria, the community's visionary farming decision. Community Service is a non-profit education organization based in Yellow Springs, Ohio. It was founded in 1940 by Antioch College president Arthur Morgan to study the value of small community living. Last year, the organization began a new program, The Community Solution, which has been studying how the imminent peak and decline in world oil production will affect society. The Community Solution advocates for non-technological, community-based responses to oil depletion. Because small communities in their various forms are among the most desirable places to live, The Community Solution's vision is a world of low-energy, small, sustainable communities creating a positive future for generations to come. Green Business - Green City Economics This presentation introduces a definition of sustainability that has been used by local businesses as well as local government entities to assess their current impact on the environment and to measure their progress towards reducing this impact - and then assesses this approach in the larger framework of economic development. Dr. Christine Glaser teaches economics at IUPU Columbus and is a partner in GreenFire Consulting Group LLC. She is co-founder of the Center for Sustainable Living and served on its board from 1994 to 2004. Contact:
